V dňoch 27. – 28. apríla 2009 Inštitút pre verejné otázky, Medzinárodné fórum pre demokratické štúdie pri Národnej nadácii pre demokraciu (International Forum for Democratic Studies, National Endowment for Democracy) a Centrum pre demokraciu, rozvoj a právny štát Standfordskej univerzity (Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, Stanford University) zorganizovali v Bratislave konferenciu „Chudoba, nerovnosť a demokracia“. Na konferencii sa zúčastnili experti z Veľkej Británie, Nórska, Mexika, USA, Argentíny, Ekvádora, Kostarickej republiky, Bulharska, Indie, Južnej Kórey, Thajska, Turecka, Maďarska, Rumunska, Srbska a Slovenska. K diskutovaným témam patrili konceptualizácia väzby medzi chudobou, nerovnosťou a demokraciou, definícia nerovnosti, význam demokracie pre riešenie sociálnych problémov, skúsenosti transformujúcich sa krajín v strednej a východnej Európe, Latinskej Amerike, východnej a južnej Ázii v boji proti chudobe.
