On April 22, 2026, a moderated discussion of experts with students entitled The Impact of the results of the parliamentary elections in Hungary on Slovakia was held at the University of Trnava.
The subject of the discussion was the broader contexts of the impacts of the aforementioned elections, one of which is the context of bilateral Slovak-Hungarian relations, the other is the context of domestic political developments in the Slovak Republic.
The discussion was attended by the president of IVO Grigorij Mesežnikov and political scientist, former member of the National Council (parliament) of the Slovak Republic and former state secretary of Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, currently the chief analyst of the research agency SCIO, Martin Klus. The discussion, organized by the Department of Political Science of the University of Trnava, was moderated by Dávid Šlosár and Barbora Birová.
Experts focused on the factors of the Tisza party's electoral victory, especially on the effective forms of addressing specific categories of voters by the party's leader, Péter Magyar, as well as on the weaknesses of the Fidesz party's mobilization campaign, whose leader, Viktor Orbán, was no longer perceived by many voters as a politician competent to solve their pressing social problems.
Political scientists also addressed the possible impacts of the change in the balance of political forces in Hungary on Slovak party politics, on the position of political entities addressing voters of Hungarian origin, and on their relations with other parties. They analyzed possible coalition strategies of the parties before and after the 2027 Slovak parliamentary elections. They also touched on the prospects of Slovak-Hungarian interstate relations after the new government headed by P. Magyar takes office.
