On November 89, freedom and Slovakia’s foreign policy

On November 16, 2025, in the full hall of the Leisure Center in Humenné, the Debates with Tea were held. The event was part of the local annual Freedom Festival. The debates were attended by the president of IVO Grigorij Mesežnikov, and Peter Tatár, Andrej Bán, Vladimír Bilčík and Miroslav Wlachovský debated with him. The organizers of the festival included the informal group of Humenné citizens Príď a Poznaj, the initiative Humenné for democracy and other active citizens.

When moderating two thematic blocks, in which all five speakers participated, the moderators Alexandra Harvanová and Zuzana Švecová took turns.

The first block of the debate discussed where Slovakia is currently located on the geopolitical map of the world and whether it really has a foreign policy oriented towards the “four cardinal points”. The speakers agreed that in reality the current government is distancing the country from its natural allies and partners in the Euro-Atlantic area and is squinting towards the East.

The second block of the debate discussed the serious problems that are plaguing the country as a result of the activities of a coalition of radical national populists, who – as it turns out – have little interest in concepts such as the rule of law, openness of governance and transparency.
