Objective: Research project Digital Literacy in Slovakia maps out one of the key preconditions for a successful transformation to an information-based society and knowledge-based economy – preparedness of broad segments of the population for usage of modern information and communication technologies (ICT).
The project is realized by empirical quantitative survey on a sample of 1134 respondents, age 14+, which enables generalization of the findings on population of SR according to basic socio-demographical characteristics (gender, age, education, nationality, size of community and region). Fieldwork data collection was carried out by the FOCUS agency, from August 8 thru August 11, 2009 by means of a network of trained interviewers using the method of face-to-face interviews.
Apart from standard mapping out of the level of digital literacy of the population, the project in 2009 is concentrating mainly on disadvantaged social groups – those who are digitally illiterate or have low level of digital literacy. The aim is to create a practical manual which would serve as the foundation for preparation of projects by organizations active in the development of digital literacy. Moreover, the data obtained - if applied - can help improve access to modern ICT – in other words, help eliminate the phenomenon of “digital gap” in the society.
Apart from the research report, the output of this project will include , the so- called Interactive Map of Digital [IL]Literacy, which will enable the following:
1. defining marginalized social groups of population, which are in the position of so called “digitally disadvantaged”;
2. identifying the level of adaptability and motivation of the marginalized social groups;
3. proposing methods, instruments and incentives, that are required in order to promote a positive shift in motivation, in changing of attitudes, behavior or habits of these social groups.
