Annotation
Just as in the previous years the publication is about change – a change the country is undergoing at the end of the election cycle. While the previous Global Reports (1998-1999 and 2000) were describing a watershed moment in the development of the country that came with the elections of 1998 and were a testimony to the way the reforms were initiated by the new administration two years into its term in office, the publication “Slovakia 2001” evaluates the impacts of these reforms on the population. It also analyzes the main trends in the development of the society in domestic politics, foreign policy, economy, social sphere and other key areas of the life of the society. It recounts the ongoing process of positive changes implemented to strengthen the democratic character of development, consolidate the democratic regime and strengthen the principles of market economy and the country’s position within the ongoing integration processes. At the same time, the publication analyzes the causes of shortfalls that have accompanied some of the reforms and their initiators; it reflects the slowing down of the ruling coalition’s ability to push through certain democratization and pro-market measures in selected key areas of public policy. The basic content structure of the publication builds on editions published in previous years. The book is divided into five thematic parts: domestic politics, foreign policy, economy, society and select issues of societal development in the Slovak Republic. The publication Slovakia 2001 is the result of a concerted effort of an informal association of think tanks, non-governmental organizations, academic and research organizations striving for a critical analysis of social and political developments grounded in pro-reform value orientations. The work of the team of authors – including renowned experts, young academics, reviewers and editors results in a high quality analytical work. The publication has been prepared for the sixth year running and is an objective report on the state of Slovak society.
The book is sold out. The full electronic version of the book is contained in Slovakia 1996-2010 DVD.
