Annotation

Continuing in the tradition of analytical yearbook series that records the country’s developments in important areas of public life, “Slovakia 2000” becomes already its fifth publication. The book serves as a stimuli for expert and lay discussion; it attempts to outline the existing problems and define possible causes of their persistence. Further it draws attention to possible future problems suggesting the ways to approach them and mitigate their negative consequences. “Slovakia 2000” is a publication about a country undergoing changes. It is a work that not only recounts the results these changes bring, but also documents the way the changes themselves take place. It evaluates the developments in the country over the course of years 1999 and 2000 and is in a sense an audit of the state of the society two years after the new government has come to power in the 1998 elections. The publication analyzes main development trends and evaluates the way these are reflected in concrete measures in domestic and foreign policy, economy, social sphere and culture. It registers important positive changes in the above mentioned areas that have taken place in the past two years and at the same time analyzes the causes that stood behind the failures and shortcomings. The integration dimension is present in practically each chapter of the publication. The authors evaluate the developments in the country with special attention paid to their compatibility with the integration process in Europe, and in particular Slovakia’s journey within the process of the EU enlargement. The basic content and structure of the publication follows the previous editions of Global Report. Just as was the case in previous years, the publication is divided into four basic thematic parts – domestic politics, foreign policy, economy and society. “Slovakia 2000. Global Report on Society” goes beyond the scope of an average publication on any given topic – it is the result of a concerted effort of the experts from think tanks, non-governmental organizations and academic research institutions pursuing independent and critical analysis grounded in pro-reform values.##to come soon
