“Slovakia 1998-1999. Global Report on the State of Society” is a fourth continuation of a series of analytical yearbooks recording the country’s developments in this significant and determining period of its history. The main focus of the publication is Slovakia – the country’s successes, shortcomings and prospects of future development. It is a publication that incites discussion, forces one to think, serves as a basis for finding solutions. The year 1998 was a year of important milestones and key decisions on a domestic political scene as well as abroad. Slovakia – unlike its three Visegrad neighbors – was not invited to join NATO and was not included in the first wave of countries to began accession negotiations with European Union. Despite these major shortfalls, the year 1998 has also brought new hopes to the state’s citizens. These hopes result from the changes that have taken place as a consequence of September parliamentary elections. Democratic forces in Slovakia have decisively won the fight for a democratic framework of the society, however they are finding themselves before important challenges. The direction the country will head will in large part depend on how new political elites react to these challenges. The content and structure of the publication builds on the previous issue of Global Report. Just as in the past, the publication is divided into basic thematic parts that include domestic politics, foreign policy, economy and society. Moreover, the publication contains a new section titled “Select Issues in the Societal Development of the Slovak Republic”, as well as new chapters. The expert analysis contained in the Global Report are frequently cited in domestic and foreign media. In the words of Jacques Rupnik “the Global Report on the State of Society has become an irreplaceable source of information for all those involved and interested in Slovakia’s transition to democracy. It offers the most comprehensive data on the state of the society, and skillfully combines reporting on key political developments of the previous year with an analysis of their deeper meaning in the context of Central Europe and the prospect of Slovakia’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.”
