Publication “Slovakia 1996. Global Report on the State of Society and Trends for the Year 1997” is a continuation of the first publication of Global Report published in 1995. A team of authors monitors and analyzes the state of society in various areas of the political and social life. The publication addresses issues of domestic political situation, public administration, the legal developments, human rights, minorities, media, foreign policy, defense and army, economic developments, agriculture, privatization, environment, health care, demography, social policies, education and research, culture and religious denominations, non-governmental sector, security situation, regions and public opinion. All together thirty authors with the assistance of 24 reviewers have authored a total of approximately 1000 pages of text, including 150 charts and almost 60 graphs. It is the aim of the book to serve its readers in the following ways: 1) To be a source of information, data analysis, reflections and view of the world we live in, with focus on the reality of life in Slovakia; 2) To attempt to find answers to questions that have surfaced after the year 1989 and which have come to the forefront of attention in terms of their urgency at the time of publication of this book 3) This publication and its publisher offer to the reader an expert view of developments in Slovakia, that claims to be alternative to the way Slovak reality has been portrayed in the past.
