Supported by: Hanns Seidel Stiftung.

Project span: January – May 2023.

Project team: Grigorij Mesežnikov, Ján Bartoš, Martin Bútora, Zora Bútorová, Oľga Gyárfášová, external authors.

Objective: In the year 2023, the Slovak Republic commemorates the 30th anniversary of its independence. Over the course of three decades, Slovakia has undergone significant changes that affected all spheres of society – political system, economy and foreign policy. The main project output – an analytical publication – summarizes the basic milestones of the transition process in the context of building the Slovak democratic statehood, points out the results of the transformation process in the economic, domestic and foreign policy areas (successes and failures), the role of political actors, dynamism of public opinion. It outlines the most pressing challenges in the turn of the third and fourth decade of the existence of an independent state.

The goal of the project is to contribute to the strengthening of democratic values as the basis of the value orientations of Slovak citizens by expanding knowledge about the process of democratization and the development of a free society, about the causes of complications and failures, about the circumstances of success in reforming the country.
