The publication sets out to answer the following question: “Why were the 1998 parliamentary elections a significant event of the young Slovak state?” The authors remind us of the exciting moments during the struggle to preserve democracy. They recount the events and discuss the meaning of the 1998 elections for the future direction of the country in the next century. In individual chapters, they analyze the shifts in public opinion after 1994, the political implications of the amendments to the Electoral law, and the importance of the elections for the development of a political party system. They devote attention to the international context of the ’98 elections, and recount differences from previous elections. Furthermore, the authors recount the election process in individual regions of Slovakia, while analyzing shifts in voting behavior and preferences of individual social groups, (not omitting the analyses of the situation in political parties representing the Hungarian minority). They also discuss the approach of the Roma to the elections, as well as the role of first-time voters, as this is a group that has significantly impacted the overall results of the elections. The publication also discusses non-governmental organizations, labor unions, religious establishments, activities of the media (including the media election campaign), advertising, the internet, and the financial resources expended on the election. It also mentions the artists and persons of public life that have played a significant role in contributing to the election results. Overall, twenty-four authors have contributed to the work. It also includes nearly a hundred documents ranging from photographs to caricatures. It is a free continuation of the compilation entitled “Slovakia: Elections 1994. Causes, Consequences, Perspectives”. In comparison to the previous publication, current authors and editors have expanded the depth and scope of the analysis.
