IVO in Ukraine

At the beginning of July, three IVO experts - Mr. Martin Bútora, Ms. Oľga Gyárfášová, and Mr. Grigorij Mesežnikov – visited Ukraine . The activities have been related and conducted within the project Ukrainians Stand behind Euro-Atlantic Values: Ignorance is not Bliss   that was carried out in cooperation with Democratic Initiative Foundation (DIF) – a public policy research think-tank based in Kiev. IVO’s mission was to communicate Slovakia’s experience with the process of NATO accession to the Ukrainian public, particularly activities aimed at increasing the level of public knowledge and support for the country’s NATO membership.

The key event was a seminar „ Shared Values Community “  held in the Diplomatic Academy of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Participants of the seminar came from all Ukrainian regions (except of Donetsk and Lugansk). In addition to talks and lectures, the presentation of a publication Slovakia´s  Way to NATO published in Ukrainian language took place. This brochure contains digest of analytic materials about Slovakia’s  experiences and preparations for the NATO integration, e.g. communication strategy, studies about NGOs activities, political parties´ attitudes, and last but not least an analyses of political and military aspects of NATO entry.

Activities of IVO experts continued by a seminar in Donetsk. They held a presentation followed by a discussion at the Research and Information Centre for International Security and Euro-Atlantic Cooperation at Donetsk National University. This action was attended by experts, NGOs activists MVO, and media representatives from two easternmost regions of Ukraine, namely Donetsk and Lugansk. During their stays IVO experts also took part in discussion broadcasts aired by the state radio station in Donetsk and the first program of Ukrainian public service television in Kiev.
