Objective: To analyze the basic trends in the development of society as they were perceived by the population before the 2002 parliamentary elections. Two quantitative sociological research projects served as the basis for the analysis, and were conducted on a representative sample of the adult population based on the following selection criteria: sex, age, level of education attained, nationality, and the size of city/town and districts of the Slovak Republic . A qualitative research method was used as a supplement to the quantitative research and included four group discussions (two conducted in Nitra and two in Revúca). The field research was conducted in February, April, and June 2002 and focused on issues of election turnout, interest in the elections, electoral preferences, voter profiles, perception of the pre-election campaign, motives behind the decisions, evaluation of political parties, and perception of the problems in society.
