Annotation
The Publication offers an analysis of the internal nuances of voting behavior, as explored by erudite author Vladimír Krivý. The author supplements his precise handling of empirical data with exploratory sociological insight, relying on long-standing experience and working knowledge of the subject matter - the characteristics of Slovak society. The analysis is based on hard data, i.e. calculations derived from voting statistics. Such sources provide a highly valid and reliable knowledge base that, unlike most sociological research, is not detracted from by selection error. The author employs a degree of creativity in the data interpretation that has led him to several findings. These allowed him to formulate concepts which have substantially increased the level of available knowledge on 1990s Slovak society. The analysis further contains a temporal dimension, as it compares the election results of 1992, 1994, and 1998. It analyses trends in voting behavior and the underlying value factors (namely the “HSĽ S factor” from the period of prewar Slovakia). It simultaneously provides a wealth of information on the success of individual political parties in rural and urban environments in the above mentioned elections, offering an analysis of the correlation between the level of success of political parties in specific regions, and the ethnic, religious, and educational makeup of particular populations. The data is presented in tables and diagrams, making it easier for the reader to orient himself/herself.
